There are compounds called curcuminoids, and the most important of which is curcumin. In turmeric, the main active ingredient in turmeric and has powerful anti-inflammatory effects as well as a very strong antioxidant. • Arthritis Drugs
  • Steroids
  • Chemotherapy
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease Drugs
  • Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

Turmeric Curcumin is a handy little spice that can help your dog in so many ways!

Number One: Turmeric can help because it is an anti-inflammatory! Many dog owners associate inflammation with dogs that have joint disease, however, chronic hidden inflammation can be a silent killer. Chronic inflammation is the root of dearly all disease. Digestive disease, cancer, arthritis, allergies, kidney disease, and dental disease are all caused by inflammation, and it’s incredibly painful to watch your beloved dog go through those diseases. Inflammation is a scary word, but not all inflammation in your dog’s body can be a bad thing. Acute inflammation will release white blood cells to the body tissues and it will start the healing process if your dog is exposed to viruses or bacteria. Chronic inflammation is what dog owners need to be conscious and cautious of. Low-grade inflammation that is chronic inflammation, stays with your dog for weeks, months, and sometimes years and chronic inflammation is behind the most degenerative and inflammatory health issues in dogs. There has been research that shows that dental disease can be linked to heart disease and that chronic bladder infections can lead to bladder cancer. Researchers are also finding that chronic low-grade inflammation is the major driver of joint disease and joint degeneration. There was a 2014 study (2) that curcumin in turmeric worked better than ibuprofen in people with arthritis and that turmeric doesn't just control the inflammation in joint disease. With inflammation being the key driver in most disease in the body and turmeric curcumin is one of the best natural anti-inflammatories that nature and medicine have to offer.

Number Two: With knowing that chronic inflammation can lead to cancer, and with knowing that turmeric is a powerful antioxidant, cancer is the bad guy and turmeric is the good guy! A UK study (3) showed that the curcumin in turmeric could stop the precancerous changes from them becoming cancer Turmeric can also treat cancer naturally and nearly 1/3 of studies done on turmeric in cancer research were promising on the results. It has been shown to kill the cancer cells and prevent more from growing! “Curcumin interferes with cancer development, growth, and spread. Recently, curcumin has received a great deal of focus because of its ability to reduce tumor size and kills cancer cells.” -The American Cancer Society.

Nearly half of the adult dogs today are diagnosed with cancer, so protecting your dog with turmeric could be a great way to avoid inflammation and cancer!

Number Three: Relief of arthritis pain is the number one thing that dog owners want for their dogs that suffer from arthritis. Arthritis pain is due to inflammation and turmeric has been known to decrease inflammation in the body. Turmeric has also been known to relieve the pain and stiffness in arthritis, and turmeric has been proven to work better than conventional pain medications. A group of researchers in Thailand published a study in 2014 (3) that compared the effects of curcumin vs. ibuprofen treatment for patients that had knee osteoarthritis. What they found was that curcumin worked just as good as ibuprofen to reduce the pain, and there were not any gastrointestinal side effects experienced by the patients who took the curcumin vs the gastrointestinal side effects that were experienced by the patients who took ibuprofen.

Number Four: Gastrointestinal Disorders often are side effects of conventional treatments for inflammation. Turmeric's anti-inflammatory effects can help treat Inflammatory Bowel Disease as well as other gastrointestinal disorders. There have been several preclinical studies and uncontrolled clinical trials that have shown the positive effects that turmeric has on gut inflammation and gut permeability.

Number Five: Replacement of steroids can be done by using turmeric. There are so many dogs that are prescribed steroids for joint pain and allergies but there are studies (4) that show curcumin is just as effective as steroids. The author of the study notes “The lack of side effects with curcumin is its greatest advantage compared with corticosteroids”. Another study published in The Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology shows that combining curcumin with a steroid reduces the side effects of the dangerous medication.

As time goes on, more research of Turmeric and the effects for dogs will be released and hopefully, the natural medicinal benefits will be prescribed more than harmful conventional steroids and other medicines.
