MSM (Methylsulfonylmenthane)

What is MSM? MSM is short for Methylsulfonylmenthane…which is a huge word! The shortened MSM is simply organic sulfur-containing a compound that is known best for its joint health benefits. MSM has been very effective in helping human patients with problems of arthritis, back pain, headaches, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome and several autoimmune diseases such as scleroderma, lupus, and fibromyalgia. Currently, in the natural products marketplace, MSM has been almost surpassing glucosamine and chondroitin as a pain-killing dietary supplement that also acts as allergy relief and an anti-inflammatory.

 MSM is a quite interesting substance, and it is an organic form of sulfur. Our in nature, microscopic phytoplankton that lives in the oceans, eventually die and the decomposition process starts. When it is decaying, a gas called dimethylsulfide (DMS) is created when sunlight and oxygen react with DMS, it causes the DMS to go through a series of oxidation steps that include dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) and other sulfates. Cloud formation studies have shown that microscopic particles of sulfate are required for water vapor in the atmosphere and clouds form. Water droplets absorb MSM and DMSO since they are highly soluble in water, and eventually, water releases their wat droplets as rain which have trace amounts of these compounds. The water droplets come back to earth and are used by plants or returned to the oceans to repeat the process. 

 After reading the process of MSM and all of those big scientific words, you're probably wondering if MSM is a natural product. In summary, MSM that is commercially produced is not necessarily a natural product. There is a ton of information on how MSM is created commercially and a good MSM commercial manufacturer uses in-process control and rigorous product testing to ensure the product is indeed pure.

Now, you are probably thinking that this is a lot of information about MSM that I do not know how to process, the information is intimidating and I'm unsure about giving my dog MSM. Well, don't be unsure! To simply put it, MSM is a natural source of biological sulfur which we are adapted through our evolution, and dogs have that same source! MSM has so many benefits for your dog.

 

 

Does your dog suffer from Chronic Pain?

• Older dogs are known to suffer from chronic pain, and unfortunately, chronic pain is the gateway for many other diseases. MSM is a natural analgesic (pain relief) and it blocks the transfer of the pain impulses through the nerve fibers. The inflammation process is also blocked by enhancing the activity of cortisol, which is a natural anti-inflammatory hormone produced by the body.

Does your dog suffer from a Neurological Disease?

• Like human brains, dog brains are also extremely sensitive to toxic materials like heavy metals and organic compounds. A lot of those compounds tend to accumulate in the nerve cells where they can cause severe oxidative damage and neurological disease can be the result. MSM is a strong antioxidant and is one of the few that can easily pass the blood-brain barrier. MSM prevents and repairs oxidative damage and restores cell membrane elasticity and permeability. • There have been studies that have indicated that MSM improves cellular glucose uptake by improving cell permeability which balances blood sugar levels and return the pancreas to normal function.

Has your dog been diagnosed with Cancer?

• I know, the big C word is very scary and unnerving to think about. There have been studies that the oral administration of MSM can protect rats against the onset of cancer. Unfortunately, I cannot say for certain that MSM will kill all the bad cancer cells in your dog’s body if they have been diagnosed with cancer, but what I can say is that there have been more and more studies on MSM's effect on cancer. The scientific community is enjoying the effect that MSM has on cancer cells, and it's being explored more as an alternative treatment to cancer.

With MSM being a strong antioxidant, it is also good detoxification as well. MSM has also been known to effectively fight inflammations that result from autoimmune reactions. In part with studying MSM for cancer, MSM has also been studied as an anti-inflammation. Those studies have shown that supplementation with MSM significantly reduces the pain of joint degeneration and inflammation. Another amazing thing is that MSM is an antiparasitic against a lot of common parasites that us dog owners have to worry about. It seems that there is nothing that MSM can’t do!
